I’ve taken a break from publishing my own books, over a year-long break—file it under the COVID-19 pandemic—but that ends today. Chupacabra: A Conner Bright Mystery is out!
It’s about a year later than I expected, but I’ll take it. And, yes, for those of you that participated in my 2019 Campfire Tales program this is the same story I wrote as part of that, and I’m finally getting it out to the rest of the world.
Conner Bright is a fun character to write. He’s my version of the hard-luck private detective. He’s got a past. He has a drinking problem. And he’s trying to make a better life for himself, but reality just keeps getting in the way.
This is a contemporary mystery series (meaning no sci-fi or fantasy, all mystery) that takes place in Phoenix Arizona, but sometimes it doesn’t look like it is—Conner just catches the strangest cases.
Chupacabra is an 80-page novella. Here’s the blurb:
Private investigator and Arizona native Conner Bright tries to hide from his past with a b-movie quality Australian accent, alligator skin boots, and a bowie knife strapped to his side, but it always seems to catch up to him.
When a bizarre murder in the desert gets blamed on the mythical blood-sucking Chupacabra, Conner gets called in to investigate. But nothing makes sense and when Conner uncovers the truth, he faces an impossible choice between what he cares the most about and his own life.
From Robert J. McCarter, the author of Out of a Christmas Sky: A Carterville Mystery, comes a private investigator and a case like no other.
