Since The Blood of Carterville came out in 2020, Return to Carterville is the story I’ve been waiting to tell.
You see, in The Blood of Carterville I exiled the protaganist, Henry Carter, from the town that bore his name and I did it in such a way that returning was never, ever going to be simple or easy.
Given this fascinating small town full of quirky powers and the curious characters, I went back in time and wrote two more books to explore the conflicts at play in The Blood of Carterville: Out of a Christmas Sky and Destroyer of Carterville.
It was a good thing I did because the conflicts and characters got so much richer and more interesting.
And then, to go forward, I had to write Faces of Carterville and now, finally, Return to Carterville.
It’s been a journey for me as a writer writing this series out of order and it’s also been a joy. This town, these characters, these strange powers are such a wonderful creative playground. These stories often surprise me, and the characters certainly do! I love that I got to create this fictional town so close to my own home, and to honor this amazing land that I am privileged to call my home.
For reference, here is the correct order to read the entire series (and the stories do all link together and create a much larger story):
Out of a Christmas Sky
Destroyer of Carterville
The Blood of Carterville
Faces of Carterville
Return to Carterville

Here’s the full blurb for Return to Carterville:
After the events of The Blood of Carterville, Henry Carter can’t return to the town that bears his name, not unless he can convince his enemy to release him from the promise that uses his own power against him and keeps him away.
But more than that, Henry must confront the Fortune Teller, who engineered Henry’s exile from his home and possesses the greatest gifts of all those with Carterville powers. The Fortune Teller sees the many futures and paid a great price to remove Henry from Carterville.
Despite this, Henry will try to return to Carterville, but to do so he’ll need some help. Can he and his friends find a way for him to return? Can they defeat the Fortune Teller? Can he do it in a way that he can live with?
From Robert J. McCarter, long-time Arizona resident and the author of Woody and June versus the Apocalypse, comes a mystery and a town you will never forget.
