“The Stars in Hoshi’s Eyes” is Out!

I got the email while I was on a work call. The Saturday Evening Post wanted to buy a story of mine called “The Stars in Hoshi’s Eyes”. THE SATURDAY EVENING POST! This is the American magazine that was started in 1897, has featured famous illustrations by Norman Rockwell, and contained the best American writers like Agatha Christie, Ray Bradbury, and John Steinbeck. It was dizzying to say the least, and it was pretty much …

“The Kraken’s Story” is Out!

The monster lurks right below the surface, huge and cruel, ready to lash out with its tentacles and destroy the ship, crushing it, taking it down into the depths, feeding on the crew. That’s the story we’ve all heard, but what does the story look like from the other side? From the “monster’s” point of view? My latest short story “The Kraken’s Story” is out today in Undercurrents: An Anthology of What Lies Beneath. It takes a …

“The Kraken’s Story” Available for Presale

My next short story, “The Kraken’s Story,” is up for presale in Undercurrents: An Anthology of What Lies Beneath. This is another fundraiser for the Don Hodges Memorial Scholarship which helps writers learn the business of writing by sending them to the Superstars Writing Seminar. There are some big-time pros in this book, like Kevin J. Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, and Jody Lynn Nye (as well as some less well-know writers like… you know… me!). “The Kraken’s Story” is …

Dragons!

First the good news: I’ve got a new story out today! “Dragon Years” is part of Dragon Writers: An Anthology. This collection features best sellers like Brandon Sanderson, Jody Lynn Nye, Todd McCaffery, and David Farland. It’s also another fundraiser for the Don Hodges Memorial Scholarship which helps writers learn the business of writing. As I usually do when submitting to anthologies, I  came at the subject of dragons from an unusual angle. “Dragon Years” …

Two Short Stories Available in Audio

Two of my short stories (“Death by Starlight” and “The Last Flight of the Acurus”) were recently featured on StarShipSofa podcast, episode #394. These are both stories of survival in space, old fashioned sci-fi with a bit of a twist. Acurus was my first sale and appeared in Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, Issue #58. Starlight is a piece of flash fiction inspired by Acurus and appeared in Every Day Fiction. The narration is beautifully done …

Wayne’s Legacy

Ten years ago today, my dear friend Wayne died. Wayne was young (just shy of 43) and danced with cancer for thirteen months before his death. The ending was difficult and sad. Wayne’s contribution to my life is anything but. He has changed me for the better in so many ways. I’ve blogged about Wayne before. Here and here. On this anniversary, it only seems right to reflect on Wayne and his legacy in my life. …

Now in Print and Coming Soon

It’s been a long time since I’ve had any writing news to report. Not that I haven’t been writing, I have. And writing a lot. I just haven’t gotten anything new out the door. Much is coming next year, though (see below). Today I want to talk about two stories now available in print. New Sun Rising: Stories for Japan This is a charity anthology with all proceeds going to the Red Cross to continue …

Fiction Gumbo

It’s been a long time since I have blogged. Life has been busy, and I have saved most of my writing energy for writing (there is a lot in the pipeline, which I am very excited about). But, in the last few months, I have released three novelettes. A novelette is longer than a short story, but much shorter than a novel. In this case they are all about 10,000 words or 40 pages long, …

Help Me Name a Ghost

It has been two months since Shuffled Off: A Ghost’s Memoir first appeared on Amazon.com. I am happy to say that people are reading and really enjoying it. The feedback as been amazing and I am grateful for each and every reader. To be honest, the feedback has also humbled me and been a rather disorienting experience.  I have consistently told that it is a “page turner” and “hard to put down”, and even more amazing things like: …

Dead Friends, Living Friendships

Recently I went to the see the final Harry Potter movie. To anyone looking on, it appeared that I was alone, and physically I was. But really I wasn’t. My friend Wayne was sitting there next to me. We had gone and seen the first Harry Potter movie together in 2001, it seemed only fitting that we go see the last one in 2011 despite the fact that he died in 2004 (I mean, why …
