Now in Print and Coming Soon

It’s been a long time since I’ve had any writing news to report. Not that I haven’t been writing, I have. And writing a lot. I just haven’t gotten anything new out the door. Much is coming next year, though (see below). Today I want to talk about two stories now available in print. New Sun Rising: Stories for Japan This is a charity anthology with all proceeds going to the Red Cross to continue …

Superheroes and Love Stories

I am struggling with how to introduce my next major release. Should I talk about my writing process and how this project came about? Should I talk about motivation, give you a peak into my strange brain. And all of that is pretty interesting (at least to me), but not really that important. It’s the story that is important. This project is a pretty significant departure from Shuffled Off: A Ghost’s Memoir so part of me …

Fiction Gumbo

It’s been a long time since I have blogged. Life has been busy, and I have saved most of my writing energy for writing (there is a lot in the pipeline, which I am very excited about). But, in the last few months, I have released three novelettes. A novelette is longer than a short story, but much shorter than a novel. In this case they are all about 10,000 words or 40 pages long, …

Help Me Name a Ghost

It has been two months since Shuffled Off: A Ghost’s Memoir first appeared on Amazon.com. I am happy to say that people are reading and really enjoying it. The feedback as been amazing and I am grateful for each and every reader. To be honest, the feedback has also humbled me and been a rather disorienting experience.  I have consistently told that it is a “page turner” and “hard to put down”, and even more amazing things like: …

100 Rejections and Counting

Back in March I blogged about hitting 50 rejections for short fictions after close to two years of submitting. Well, now, about seven months later I have hit the big 100. The first 50 rejections took 2 years, the second took 7 months. What’s changed? Well I have a full enough pipeline to have 8 to 10 stories out to market at once. This has done a lot to speed up those rejections. This is …

Dead Friends, Living Friendships

Recently I went to the see the final Harry Potter movie. To anyone looking on, it appeared that I was alone, and physically I was. But really I wasn’t. My friend Wayne was sitting there next to me. We had gone and seen the first Harry Potter movie together in 2001, it seemed only fitting that we go see the last one in 2011 despite the fact that he died in 2004 (I mean, why …

Welcome

Hi, My name is Robert J. McCarter and I am a writer (among other things). Very soon now, my first novel Shuffled Off: A Ghosts Memoir is coming out so it seems I need a site for readers. This is that site. Here I will be posting about my writing and releases. If you are interested in less focused ramblings (often about the writing processes), check out my other blog: notabug.net. In the mean time feel free to …

Indie Adventures – Part 5 – Bringing in the Pros

New to this series? Start with: Indie Adventures – Part 1 – The Starting Line This series is titled “Indie Adventures,” and I am going the indie route with the publishing of my novel, but that does not mean that I am doing it all myself. Indie is about control, it is not about who does the work. So, indie does not mean you have to do all the editing and proofing, create the cover art, …

The Writers of the Future Contest – A Class Act

The Writers of the Future Contest (WOTF) is a class act. If you write speculative fiction (sci-fi or fantasy) and aren’t a pro, then do yourself a favor and submit. I have been sitting on this for a while, since it wasn’t public, but I recently got my second honorable mention  (2 honorable mentions in 3 tries).  This one is for fun sci-fi adventure novelette called “Ghost Hacker, Zombie Maker”. Here is what is classy about …
